“Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies…” Ps 23v5. Dame Whina Cooper and her mokopuna walk together on the historic 1975 Land March in New Zealand. The march started in Te Hapua, Northland, finishing at the steps of Parliament in the capital, Wellington, to protest the ongoing Ma­ori land alienation. …… The iconic image was captured by Herald photographer Michael Tubberty. On the opposite wall in the interior hangs one of Colin McCahon’s preparatory designs for the unrealized mural for the CALTEX Oil offices in Auckland, New Zealand. Basic land redress is sought on one wall, while on the other is the misappropriation of tikanga Maori. The figure with the table cloth, reminiscent of the communion veil used to uncover the sacraments, alludes to the fraught position of the missionaries in New Zealand. You give and take away…….
