His masters voice SERIES

 

The subtext here is of obedience…..doing the bidding of the master. The nostalgic wooden wind up box contrasts with the cold technology of the satellite dish. The chiaroscuro of the renaissance painters is used here to create a nostalgic sense of warmth versus the slick world of now. This work references Francis Barraud’s work of the same title.

Mickey and Nipper   2015    Oil on Board   300mmx300mm         sold

Mickey and Nipper are metaphors for listening devices. Nipper from ‘His Master’s Voice’ and, the innocuous hiding in plain sight, Disney Character, Mickey Mouse. The backdrop is the twilight threatening sky of doom above the spy base.

Tuning in and doing the bidding of the paymaster/ ringleader. The dart represents protest at the compliance of the seal.

The performing elephant is surveilled through the viewing room window to the left of the composition. Its compliance is monitored by the camera.
This controlled environment is contrasted with the warmth of the sensuous room. The room is reminiscent of the Renaissance artist Piero della Franchesca’s work “The Flagellation”.
